Costa Classica Cruise May 2013 (Day 2 & 3) - Catania, Sicily & Day At Sea

Day 2 - Catania, Sicily

We had a lovely, restful morning onboard after a yummy breakfast sitting with this adorable couple from the Abruzzi region of Italy. Their daughter, a dance teacher and midwife, gave them the cruise as a 25th wedding anniversary gift. Such nice people and we chatted, mostly mom doing the talking in Italian, about life in their seaside town and how they just bought half a pig from the butcher who will provide them, from their half with 4 large capocollo (spicy cold cut,) a huge prosciutto, pounds of cutlets and a few other various items from the piggy. From what it sounded like it makes total sense to share a half pig then to buy it all separately from the butcher each week. I don't imagine you can buy half a pig though in NYC and if you could I'm not sure where you'd store the pork products until consumption. It's not like many New Yorkers or even Bostonians have a space for hanging up huge side of prosciutto.

After breakfast it was just hanging out at the spa and reading while we cruised down the south west coast of Italy and then through the narrowest part separating mainland Italy with Sicily before reaching Catania around 2:30pm.

We were docked, cleared by immigration and off the ship by 3:00pm and mom and I choose to do a tour of the city, only 5 Euros and well worth it since the city, though small, is still pretty spread out and we had just under 4 hours there because we are on the early dinner seating so it was good to make the most of the visit before re-boarding.

Many passengers went on the cruise sponsored tour to Taormina and Mt. Etna but mom wasn't too interested in going back there as we had spent a week in the mountain town 35 years ago and since it was an almost 2 hour bus ride there and 2 hours back with just and hour to explore the town it wasn't really worth the rush when we could just as easily enjoy a slow paced visit to Catania a place neither of us had visited previously.

Cataina has some beautiful old churches and cobble-stoned streets lined with beautiful trees as well as large stone 18th century residential and office buildings. Not to mention a few palaces that are now municipal buildings or occupied by the many universities that reside here.

getting one of these, too small for all her stuff and
her kayak.

After getting off in the Duomo plaza where they have a statue of a large marble elephant, one of the symbols of the town, as well as the gorgeous Duomo with the relics of St. Agatha, the patron saint of Catania we walked along the side streets going in and out of shops.

As we stood in front of a housewares shop looking in the windows which advertised 50 percent off everything because they were sadly going out of business, this very sweet man heard us speaking English and came over to sort of welcome us to his city. I think Sebastiano, a high school teacher for special needs students was just so excited to practice his English which was pretty good. He had studies psychology in Rome and then lived in Milan for several years before returning to his home in Sicily where he was born and raised.

He was so friendly and kindly offered to take us on a walking tour of the city which was incredibly informative and so nice to have a guide who was clearly passionate about the city, it's architecture and it's history.

We eventually made it back to the Duomo Plaza and said goodbye to Sebastiano who was of to get his bike and go home and then we walked the 10 minutes walk to the cruise port, did some internet work and then made it up to dinner only about 5 minutes late.

It was a lovely Sicilian day and so glad we got visit this charming old seaside city!

Day 3 - Day at Sea

It was a very, very relaxing day at sea with lots of reading, some spa time and mom got in a nice nap.

After the gala Captains dinner we had a presentation and toast with the Captain and his officers in the theater and strangely the Captain of this ships is accompanied by two security guards, one that always walks in front of him and one that walks behind him. I've never seen that before but perhaps it's normal to protect the Captain like that or maybe it's just this particular Captain who fears being stopped or worse attacked, I'm not sure.

After his speech informing us of the Costa Crusie Companies 65th Birthday that they are currently celebrating and we all toasted the ship the staff left and we were then treated to an incredible concert by a Spanish singer, Marta Llenas. She covered just about every language of the passengers in her song selection with the exception of German and Turkish and did and incredible set of Edith Piaf songs with footage of the famous French singer on a large screen behind her.

It was such a nice day with absolutely no running around which was nice for a change but I miss all that daily walking so I'm looking forward to Athens tomorrow.
